The 7th Zone Championship Tournament was hosted in Lethbridge, Alberta on August 8th, 9th, and 10th and players, coaches, and fans were treated with an exciting, competitive weekend of baseball. Lethbridge is home to two of the nicest baseball facilities in the Country; both Lloyd Nolan Yard and Spitz Stadium. These facilities hosted approximately 160 athletes throughout the province in a 3 day championship tournament. After a couple tough losses in the semi-finals, Zone 5 and Zone 3 battled for bronze Monday morning. With 2-out in the bottom of the 6th and runners on 2nd and 3rd, Mitch McGeein stroked a 2-strike single up the middle driving in 2 runs, which proved to be enough as Zone 3 took the bronze medal with a 4-2 victory over Zone 5.
The gold medal game featured Zone 4 versus Zone 6. Coming off an exciting 8 - 5 semi final victory, Zone 6 was seeking to win its first Alberta Zone Championship gold medal since 2003. Standing in their way was Zone 4 who proved themselves worthy after a 6 - 3 semi final victory over Zone 3, who was undefeated in round robin play. Riding the shoulders of young pitcher Reign Letkeman, Zone 4 earned the gold medal with an 8 - 0 victory over Zone 6. Letkeman went 7 strong innings, giving up 4 hits and 0 runs. This is Zone 4's second gold medal in 3 years as they claimed gold back in 2007. The AABC would like to congratulate Lethbridge for hosting a competitive weekend of baseball at both Spitz Stadium and Lloyd Nolan Yard. Thank you to all players, coaches, parents, and volunteers for making the 2009 Alberta Zone Championships a complete success! Tournament Results (click Read More to view) |
